Kong Gives Back: Volunteering at Project Open Hand
When it came time to decide what to do for our first volunteer event of 2019, we Kongers were looking to get hands-on in serving some of the most at-risk members of our community. Project Open Hand, whose mission is to improve health outcomes and quality of life by providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable, provided Kong just the opportunity to do so.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by our engaged and adept host, Alicia Orozco, who briefed us on the rich history of the non-profit organization. Specifically, Alicia educated us on the communities that the organization primarily serves – those living with HIV/AIDS, chronic illness, seniors and adults with disabilities. More importantly, Project Open Hand works to not only provide meals, but nutritious meals with love, meaning in addition to meals, the non-profit provides nutrition education and counseling to empower these communities and provide access to better quality of life.
After our history lesson, it was time to get to work! We had the pleasure of volunteering alongside staff and other volunteers in duties that varied from chopping up onions and celery to preparing burger patties and meal packaging. Project Open Hand provided an impeccably clean, safe and fun environment for us to work, and the time flew by. At the end of the day, Alicia debriefed with us and shared what we had accomplished:
- 4,000 servings of onions
- 250 servings of celery
- 300 servings of cilantro
- 800 servings of burger patties
This totaled 5,350 servings!
While Project Open Hand exemplifies all of Kong’s core values, I think they best serve as an example of being an Explorer. From the onset, the organization has challenged the status quo of what is possible in terms of providing access to nutrition, truly showing how these underserved communities benefit through the healing power of nutritious food.
We look forward to our next volunteer event and the chance to engage with our community again!
