Mashape and IBM unite to provide OpenWhisk plugin for Kong

Mashape is excited to partner with IBM and announce the OpenWhisk plugin for Kong’s API Gateway, available both to the open source community via Apache OpenWhisk and as a commercial offering on Bluemix, IBM’s cloud platform. OpenWhisk is a cloud-first distributed event-based programming service, whose serverless architecture accelerates development of small, distinct, and independent actions.

By eliminating infrastructure limitations, OpenWhisk enables teams to efficiently work on different pieces of code simultaneously. It provides a programming model to upload event handlers and register the handlers to respond to various events. Now developers can use Kong to invoke Apache OpenWhisk serverless functions in combination with other plugins. Learn more about the OpenWhisk plugin here.

With nearly 10,000 stars on Github and over 2.5 million downloads, Kong is the most popular open-source API gateway and microservices management layer. Built on top of NGINX, a high-performance web server, Kong is designed to sit in front of highly performant APIs and microservices to protect, extend and orchestrate distributed systems.

OpenWhisk can be run on-prem or in the cloud; plus, one of its primary strengths is the ability to run on any infrastructure, such as IBM Bluemix. In the context of developing serverless microservice backends, API Gateways have become an essential puzzle piece. A relationship with Kong enables IBM to add an open-source API Gateway solution to their OpenWhisk project.

“Kong always welcomes ecosystem partners. With the OpenWhisk relationship and plugin, developers can now protect, secure and extend serverless Actions, with low latency and high throughput. Actions will automatically scale to meet the application’s demand and then disappear. Best of all, Kong will make those Actions available through an easy to use RESTful API that developers can use to trigger events from their favorite libraries.” said Marco Palladino, Mashape’s CTO.
