Kong Named a Visionary in the 2018 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Full Lifecycle API Management
Right from the start of joining Kong, I knew there was something magical going on here. I believe the passion, intellect, and energy of the team paired with the tailwinds of prolific adoption of modern architectures by the industry is the reason why Kong was recently named a Visionary in Gartner’s April 2018 Magic Quadrant for Full Lifecycle API Management. Gaining favorable recognition from Gartner is a top goal for all technology companies, and in my ~25 years in the software industry, I haven’t seen a company progress as rapidly as Kong on the Magic Quadrant.
The typical pattern I’ve witnessed for companies is that they first make it onto the “Cool Vendors” List, then onto the Magic Quadrant as a Niche Player, then to a Visionary, and then a Leader. So how did Kong jump to a Visionary only three years after being born out of an open source project? I believe the answer is that a new age of modern architectures is upon us, and it requires a new paradigm for handling API.
It’s no secret that architectures are evolving. In recent years the proliferation of microservices, serverless, containers, and kubernetes have fundamentally changed the way in which companies develop, deploy, and improve software. But as is true with most innovations, these new technologies have been hampered by legacy components in other parts of the stack, particularly API gateways and management platforms.
Kong has a focus on enabling all modern architectures at scale. Kong is compatible with all environments and architecture patterns, which allows customers to transition from old monolithic architecture towards the architecture or deployment pattern of their choice without risk of being locked into one vendor or architecture.
This fundamental shift towards modern architectures is a core reason why Kong has experienced such rapid growth with some of the world’s best and largest companies. However, another primary driver of Kong’s success comes from our open source community. We currently have over 20 million downloads of Kong CE, and each user provides tremendous value as an advocate, contributor, or evaluator for the Kong platform. The level of enthusiasm that the community brings is incredible. There’s no greater example of this than a group of our contributors, unbeknownst to us, writing a book about how they see Kong fundamentally changing the API landscape.
While expectations set by our community and industry experts are high, we’re excited to exceed them. And we want to invite you to be a part of the journey. Are you interested in learning about the Why, How, and What of the changing API landscape? At the upcoming Kong Summit industry thought leaders, enterprise customers, community users, and Kong executives will come together to discuss the trends shaping the API landscape and exciting Kong announcements.
