# Build AI-Driven DocuSign Workflows Secured with Kong API Gateway
This walkthrough shows how to use a natural-language request in Claude to trigger a governed DocuSign workflow that updates a customer address by calling enterprise APIs through Kong. Rather than letting an AI agent directly execute backend actions, the approach separates responsibilities: Claude captures intent and gathers required inputs, the DocuSign MCP server exposes approved workflow capabilities, and DocuSign Workflow Builder runs a deterministic, auditable business process that can include data validation, approval routing, identity verification, eSignature, and the final system-of-record update. The demo uses a custom extension app to connect Workflow Builder to third-party APIs behind a Kong gateway, with Kong providing security, scoped access, traffic management, rate limiting, observability, and debugging. It also highlights Kong’s mocking plugin as a development tool for testing DocuSign’s strict request and response schemas before swapping mocked endpoints for real backend services such as an Azure Cosmos DB-backed implementation.
