API Summit 2025 Recap: AI Connectivity and the Agentic Era
That’s a wrap on API Summit 2025! At our eighth annual event, the brightest minds in the worlds of APIs and AI gathered in New York City to define the next chapter of digital innovation. We're entering an era where APIs are not just connecting services but connecting intelligence. APIs are the neural pathways of this new AI world, where agents will reason, act, and collaborate through endpoints.
At this year's API Summit, we saw how quickly this vision is becoming reality. We explored the critical role APIs play in enabling AI connectivity. And as always, we shipped, unveiling a wave of new product innovations designed to help every organization thrive in this new age of intelligent infrastructure.
Couldn’t attend this year’s API Summit? Here's a rundown of the top sessions, announcements, and product news defining the agentic era.

Connecting the agentic AI world with Kong
The agentic era is here. A recent study on the impact of agentic AI found that 90% of organizations are already adopting AI agents, with 79% expecting full-scale adoption within three years.
Interactions are shifting from cumbersome, multi-step processes to immediate, intelligent, and anticipatory experiences. (Just consider how different the process is of planning a business trip across continents before and after ChatGPT.)
This mega shift presents a clear mandate: every business must become agentic, or risk becoming obsolete. While past technological waves — from the internet boom to mobile apps — have driven exponential growth in APIs, the needs of AI agents are causing an unprecedented hockey stick surge. APIs are no longer just for application programming; they are the lifeblood of AI, making the exposure, security, and governance of all your digital assets paramount.

This new reality requires a unified approach. For AI agents to function, digital assets must be turned into readily consumable APIs and MCPs, ensuring they are discoverable and "speak plain English" to LLMs.
We're seeing a massive convergence: AI traffic, driven by tokens, is rapidly merging with traditional API traffic. This isn't just an augmentation; it's the merging of two streams into a single connectivity layer, highlighting the need to manage, secure, and govern all traffic sources together to prepare the organization for the future.
At Kong, we're solving this by defining and owning the new category: AI connectivity. The Kong Konnect platform is the unified API and AI platform designed to manage this converged landscape. It provides the essential layer for agents to orchestrate microservices, events, LLMs, and MCPs — all under a single pane of glass. By unifying runtimes, governance, security, and observability, Konnect ensures that whatever comes next, your organization is prepared to adapt fast, securely, and scale into the future of the agentic world.

Hundreds of developers, product managers, platform owners/engineers, architects, IT pros, and tech leaders gathered in New York City for Kong's eighth annual event.
Innovative organizations find success with Kong
From BMW to United Airlines to Prudential, many innovative organizations had a presence at API Summit 2025 to share their API and AI successes and lessons learned.
On Wednesday, Kong SVP of Product Reza Shafii joined Demetry Zilberg, CTO of alterDomus, and Rupesh Papneja, Principal Engineer at PEXA, to explore one of the most pressing topics in tech today: powering real-world AI applications with secure, reliable, and discoverable APIs.
“AI, AI, AI: it’s all we seem to be talking about,” Reza said, emphasizing that beyond the hype and noise, the key to meaningful AI outcomes lies in high-quality data and the infrastructure that delivers it. “Garbage in, garbage out,” he noted to underline the fact businesses need to feed nutritious data and quality APIs to make agents successful.

On Tuesday, Cassie Kozyrkov — CEO of Kozyr, AI luminary, former Chief Decision Scientist at Google, and pioneer of decision intelligence — discussed what it takes to lead in an AI-first world. Then, we talked innovation (and had some laughs) with a man who knows a thing or two about reinvention, Kal Penn, the Emmy-nominated actor, writer, and producer who pivoted to public service during his stint as a White House staff member.
Wednesday, we sat down with renowned computer scientist, author, entrepreneur, futurist, and inventor Ray Kurzweil to explore the future of AI, computation, and human intelligence.
Kurzweil shared a striking view of the exponential price-performance curve of computing from 1939 to to today, showing how rapidly advancing compute power is setting the stage for the next era of intelligence. He underscored that AI is on a trajectory to merge with human biological intelligence, unlocking capabilities far beyond what’s possible today.
From accelerating progress across industries to extending human health and longevity, Kurzweil believes AI will act as a powerful augmentor rather than a replacement.
“By 2029, we’ll see a world filled with intelligent robots working alongside us,” he said, underscoring a future where human potential and machine capability evolve together.

Bridge the observability gap between API and AI
We tackled the growing challenge of operational blindness in hybrid environments by showing how to unify API and AI observability. As AI applications become deeply integrated with existing API ecosystems, fragmented monitoring creates significant risks. We demonstrated how Kong Konnect, through AI Gateway and Advanced Analytics, delivers a unified observability architecture. This provides a single source of truth for cross-system latency, cost attribution for LLM consumption, failure correlation, and a consistent security posture, empowering teams to stay ahead of the curve.
Deliver a unified Kubernetes experience in Konnect
Building on the unification of our Ingress Controller and Gateway Operator, we announced the upcoming release of Kong Operator 2.1. This release represented the next step in unifying Kubernetes operations, introducing powerful new capabilities for a first-class Kubernetes experience.
A major highlight is Gateway API support in hybrid mode, allowing teams to use the Gateway API to manage both Konnect and self-managed deployments. Other key features included tighter integration with the Konnect Debugger, automatic cataloging of Kubernetes services into the Konnect Service Catalog, and a seamless flow of those services into the Developer Portal.
Multi-cloud API and AI infra get smarter with fully managed Redis instances for Dedicated Cloud Gateways
We continued to enhance our multi-cloud agentic infrastructure with the announcement of fully managed Redis instances for Konnect Dedicated Cloud Gateways (DCGWs).
This launch removes one of the final barriers to adopting enterprise-grade API management by eliminating the need for customers to provision and maintain their own Redis infrastructure for powerful plugins like Rate Limiting and Caching. With Redis now managed by Kong and co-located with gateway data planes, customers get zero operational overhead and enterprise-grade performance, which is especially critical for AI use cases like AI rate-limiting to control costs and intelligent caching to improve LLM response times.
