There are two key concepts when a developer works with an API. 

• - The OpenAPI Spec describes how the API should work, and helps agents discover what is possible.
• - The Collection and Requests help debug and verify how the endpoints currently function.

Previously, Insomnia made you work with both Documents and Collections, and it wasn’t always clear why there was a difference. In 13.3, we’ve replaced both with API Collections. Now the spec is easily found on the main API collection screen. Don’t worry, neither is required - you’re more than welcome to use only requests, or only specs… we just wanted it to be easy to keep the two halves of your API together.

As part of this, we’ve further deprecated our legacy Unit Tests functionality, they are now hidden by default unless you’re already using them. Best practice continues to be testing via [_after-response scripts_](https://developer.konghq.com/insomnia/scripts/#after-response-scripts)_after-response scripts_.  If you’re still using the Unit Tests functionality, it will be available from the new API Collection screen and it will continue to work as it did. We have **no plans** to remove Unit Tests from the product, but we continue to recommend migrating to post-response scripts. There is a new “Enable Legacy Unit Tests” setting in Preferences -> General, should you need to manually show/hide the functionality.

We think the world of API clients has changed more this year than in the last decade. Kong is the AI connectivity company, and Konnect is where all your endpoints and context are stored.

 We’re so proud to be the only API client that is evolving into a platform, so Insomnia can be the secure, compliant, governed way you deploy all that context and endpoints out to your developers and agents. In that light, we’ve switched the Konnect integration to be accessible via the Organization menu, rather than as tabs, so that you can access it the same as any other project.

Earlier this year in v13, we redid the main navigation of Insomnia. The majority of feedback was very positive, but there’s one thing we heard loud and clear. Many of you spend the vast majority of your time in just a handful of collections, and don’t want the navigation full of things you rarely look at. So, Insomnia 13.2 now supports Focus Mode so that when you click on an API Collection, the navigation drills in by default and you can focus on what you’re working on most.

Like the classic v13 approach? Simply turn off the “Sidebar Focus for Collections” setting in Preferences -> General, and your navigation will stay v13-style, giving you an eye across all your projects and their contents.

We also improved the drag and drop experience while we were there, so it should be even easier to organize your requests exactly how you want.

Insomnia supports environments at three different levels:

• - Project-level, so you can reuse a base_url or other state across an entire project.
• - Collection-level, for things related to one specific API.
• - Folder-level, for tokens and other things that only apply to a handful of requests.

And of course, inheritance works the same as in any programming language. If you define a variable at multiple levels, folders override collections, collections override projects.

So, first change to environments: we’ve made it easier to pick which project and collection level environments you want to use when running a request.

Since v9.3 in 2024, Insomnia has supported nesting environments - and as part of that, you can create a private environment. The benefit of a private environment is that information stored in there never leaves your machine - it won’t get committed, exported or anything else. Of course, for truly secure information we recommend [_our native external vault integrations with AWS, Azure, GCP and HashiCorp_](https://developer.konghq.com/insomnia/external-vault/)_our native external vault integrations with AWS, Azure, GCP and HashiCorp_. But for things like usernames or your own local settings, private environments can be a great solution.

The change you’ll notice in 13.3 is we’ve cleaned up the UX so it’s much easier to discover and create private sub environments.

• - Collaborating with vault secrets across your team is much easier than ever - if you had trouble with vault secrets and git pull/push, give the new one a try.
• - In v12.6, Git projects added support for you working directly with the local files, so you can work with Insomnia from VS Code, your favourite Git tool, Claude Code, or anything else. In 13.2 we made those folder names contain the project names for easier navigation.
• - oAuth2 request logs now appear in the console timeline.
• - We fixed several bugs around undo/redo so you can undo that mistake you just made (not that you ever make mistakes ;) )
