What's New in Kong Insomnia v12.4: Better Tabs, Clearer Commits, Smarter Admin

Haley Giuliano
Sr. PMM - Insomnia, Kong

Introducing Insomnia v12.4

We've been all ears. Your workflows clearly told us what mattered most: tabs that adapt to how you actually work, Git commits you can actually understand, and admin controls that don't require a manual to navigate. Insomnia v12.4 discards the friction so you can focus on what’s most important: building trusted APIs, not fighting your tools.

With v12.4, it’s all come down to this: less guesswork and more control.

  • The tabs you expect: organize your workspace your way
  • Clear Git commits: see exactly what changed and who made the changes
  • Sharable local AI models: use AI without leaving your infrastructure
  • Smarter admin controls: Domain Lock, Domain Capture, and visibility into SCIM that makes sense

Insomnia v12.4 in detail

Shareable, local AI models

Insomnia v12 introduced the ability to use and opt in or out of AI features such as autogenerated mock servers with natural language, smart commits, and, later on, response sampling for MCP clients, either through common cloud providers or by running locally on your machine.

With Insomnia v12.4, you can now deploy an AI model on your network and share it across your team. The good news? Your code and data stays on your own infrastructure with locally deployed models.

How would this work in the wild? I’m glad you asked. Suppose your team is writing API integrations, and you want Claude, or some other LLM, to help with code generation and documentation. But you can't send your code to the cloud because compliance strictly forbids it. So instead, you deploy a local model on your infrastructure, and now your whole team can access it from Insomnia while your code stays absolutely private.

Check out the local LLM URL demo below.

The tabs you expect (and what you deserve)

In practice, everyone uses tabs differently. Some (I’m not naming names) keep dozens open. Some want only one tab for deep focus. Your developer workspace should adapt to how you work, not the other way around.

So we took that feedback seriously. We rearchitected the entire tabs experience from the ground up, and now it works exactly the way you'd expect out of the box.

Want to open a ton of tabs? Go for it. Want a single tab for focus mode? Done. Want the tabs to stay out of your way? Insomnia gets you covered. It’s the kind of polish that may not be revolutionary, but we want you to work as frictionlessly as possible.

See it in action in our new Insomnia tabs video demo below.

Clear Git Commits

Insomnia gives you the freedom to choose how and where you want to store your data: local, Git, or cloud. With Git, your API data goes directly to your repository, but certain metadata changes or updates were creating confusion when developers couldn’t immediately understand what changed in a commit or why certain edits couldn’t be discarded.

We heard the frustration, and in Insomnia v12.4, we improved the commit changes screen to more clearly indicate these necessary changes. Now, when you commit, you can see exactly what you changed versus which changes originated from metadata updates. It’s a simple fix, but it makes all the difference when you’re working in Git and need full visibility into your changes.

Other Insomnia updates

Are you an Enterprise Insomnia admin? We’ve also made some powerful updates just for you — giving admins smarter, more visible control over who gets access to your workspace and how.

Improved domains page

Managing user access shouldn't be confusing. Domain Capture and Domain Lock do different things, and we made it crystal clear below.

  • Domain Lock: Use domain lock to remove access to your Insomnia Enterprise account for existing hobby users and uninvited new users. It's your security gatekeeping; only people you want have access.
  • Domain Capture: Use domain capture to automatically add new users to your Insomnia Enterprise account when they sign up from a verified email domain. New team members get onboarded instantly without manual provisioning.

On top of that, we’re releasing comprehensive documentation soon to help you choose the right combination of SCIM, Domain Capture, and Domain Lock for your organization.

Licenses page updates

See exactly who was provisioned via SCIM, sort and filter in seconds, and know precisely who has access to what. Full visibility. Total control.

SCIM token management

SCIM changes apply exclusively to SCIM-provisioned users, but manually provisioned users remain unaffected. Admins can manually refresh tokens at any time, and with 3-week expiration warnings built in, your team will always have ample time to act before a token expires.

Starting next month, admins will be able to specify custom token refresh intervals — no longer locked into the default 90-day cycle. Requested by our users, delivered in the next release.

Wrapping up

Insomnia v12.4 is built on a simple premise: your time is too valuable to waste fighting your tools. We took your feedback seriously, tore down the experiences that were creating friction, and rebuilt them the right way. Tabs. Commits. Admin controls. Local AI. Every update traces back to one principle: you should be heads-down building great APIs, not troubleshooting your workspace.

Trust isn't handed out. It's earned through consistent delivery, genuine listening, and shipping updates that move the needle on the problems that actually matter to you. Insomnia v12.4 is proof that we're not just paying attention. We're acting on it.

And we're just getting started. There's more in the pipeline, and it's worth the wait.
